Typical Sessions

First session

If you are booking a therapy session for your animal please bear in mind that before your first session, permission must be gained from your vet if they have not contacted Ulrike directly as a referral case.

The animal's history will be taken, to include any relevant information on temperament, injuries and schooling or behavioural problems. With horses, shoeing (foot balance), teeth and saddle fit may be checked and an animal's conformation and symmetry will be assessed and considered.

You may be asked to show your animal:
  • Walk and trot on straight lines.
  • During rein back.
  • On a tight circle.
  • On the lunge or loose and;
  • Ridden or taken over different surfaces.
This initial gathering of information allows assessment of all the factors that could be contributing to performance problems but may vary depending on his age, facilities and the specific problems to be addressed.

Typical session outline

When the treatment is given, a note is made of any potential problem areas where tensions or spasms can be felt, or where manipulations have been made. The animal will be massaged with the appropriate massage techniques and stretches may be applied. Then adjustments are made to the skeletal frame if manipulation is also required. Each session is a holistic, whole body treatment and most animals quickly learn to relax and enjoy it!

On completion of a session, owners can discuss with Ulrike the follow up care recommendations and may be given some exercises to follow also. An individual work programme can also be discussed required and where necessary recommendations may be given to consult with other relevant specialists, such as the vet, saddle fitter, dentist or farrier.

It is a legal requirement under the Veterinary Surgeons Act (1966) that veterinary permission must be gained before any manipulative therapist can work on your animal. In the vast majority of cases this can easily be accomplished over the phone. If your animal were to be lame or otherwise unhealthy or have any potential contraindications to having a treatment, I may advise for the vet to see the animal first.
